Wheeler High School in Newsweek Top High Schools List

Wheeler High School was named among among the nation’s best high schools in the 2010 Newsweek Magazine’s Best High Schools in America List.

The list represents just 6% of all public high schools in the country. Criteria is based on how well students at the high school are challenged with advanced placement courses and tests. Wheeler’s ranking of 347 was a jump of 430 rankings above last year and places Wheeler as the second-highest ranked school in Cobb County.

Congratulations to Dami Aladesanmi for being accepted to the Medical College of Georgia’s Student Educational Enrichment Program. This is a 7-week summer program in which students take college-level classes and volunteer in a local hospital while preparing for college. Students
also recieve a $1016 stipend.

Congratulations to our newest member of the 800 Club, Kelsey Maloney, ‘11, who scored a perfect 800 on the Math portion of the SAT. Wheeler Magnet now has 62 students who have achieved a perfect score on one or more portions of the SAT. View all 800 Club members.

Congratulations to Wayne Lu, who won the Clayton State University Annual Mathematics and Information Technology Contest Individual Math Champion at Clayton State University.

Congratulations to the following Magnet seniors who were named winners of $2,500 National Merit Scholarships on May 5: Jennifer Dou, who is planning a career in biology or biochemistry; Christopher Leinweber, engineering; Noah Levine, theater; Mengjie Liu, chemical engineering; and Darpan Patel, medical law.

Congratulations to Pranay Udutha and Taylor Revere for being selected to receive an Academic Scholarship from the Cobb County Public Schools Educational Foundation. The foundation awards academic scholarships to Cobbs’ graduating seniors from each of our schools.

Magnet Internship/Research Presentations

Our Magnet seniors are in the process of completing their Internship experiences and Research projects. As a culminating component of the Internship/Research courses, all Magnet seniors give a presentation explaining their research questions and internship experiences.

Presentations will be taking place during the school day from Monday, May 10 through Friday, May 14 in room 512 in the Magnet Building. Presentations will be done during all periods except A lunch. No presentations will be given during 4th block on Friday, May 14 due to the yearbook assembly. Presentations are open for anyone to attend. Senior parents often come to listen to their students’ presentations. Internship mentors are also invited to listen to the presentations. Please feel free to come and hear the presentations.

You can email Dr. Dawn Adams (dawn.adams@cobbk12.org) or Dr. Cheryl Crooks (cheryl.crooks@cobbk12.org) to let them know you will be coming. Please stop by the Magnet office to pick up a visitor pass on your way to room 512 for the presentations.

Odyssey of the Mind

Two WHS Odyssey of the Mind teams competed at the state championships on April 10 at Columbus State University. The team of Jason Rodencal, Evan Cahill, Cheyenne Dahlmann, Steffen Christofferson, Xander Miller, and Tiffany Zeng, coached by Wendy Blumenthal finished first and will be moving on to compete at the 2010 World Odyssey of the Mind competition on May 26-30 at Michigan State University. The team of Dhruv Karunakaran, James Liu, Pranav Shenoy and Rev Rameshkumar, coached by Mr. Hawkins, placed third by solving the “Flight” question. Please support the team’s fundraising efforts by purchasing Hershey products when you see team members selling them

This year, we are offering the opportunity to purchase a reserved table with 8 seats for $275. There are only a limited number of tables for sale, first-come, first-served beginning Tuesday, Jan 19, 2010 by emailing Lisa Kiblinger at kiblinger@bellsouth.net. We expect these to go quickly, so if you are interested, make sure to email Lisa on Jan 19! Go in with some friends, or consider inviting a new family or a teacher to join you.
